From Rotherham with Love

Did you ever fantasise about being a spook. Working for the service. If you did I bet you didn’t think it would be like working for the LA! You would have to sign the Official Secrets Act but you  would most likely be office based.

In both cases you would find yourself dealing with office politics, working with politicians, tricky  relations with the media, lots of meetings, need to know philosophy, budget cuts. The work would mostly be routine, dull, repetitive ,answering/monitering  emails, compiling statistics, writing reports,  covering your arse, advising politicians.

Going through people’s rubbish bins searching for something incriminating/revealing probably isn’t what you had in mind when you joined up. That and the paranoia associated with not being able to take anything or one at face value. But is it so different to when the LA chief executive instructed IT to go through all senior managers emails to find out who leaked to the media and weed out the disloyal. Didn’t find out where the leak was but provided  HR with some worrying material /new scenarios for management training.

The sudden disappearance, no leaving do. The individuals non existence after the initial announcement and speculation. Maybe someone is still in contact but if they are they are not owning up.

Both professions are populated by cynics , idealists, disgruntled employees, fast trackers, those burnt out and the over ambitious. Both agencies are engaged in The Games point scoring by and against so called friends( USA - NHS) and threats from hostile parties (Russia/China -Private sector).

And for the senior people you can leave the service but the service rarely leaves you.
