At the very least, it should persuade managers to discuss seriously how their organisations conduct equality and diversity monitoring. Three thoughts occur: The first is the fundamental importance of a person's right to self-identification, using whatever identifiers and vocabulary s/he feels appropriate. 'Tick boxes' must be made to fit the person, not vice versa. The second is the importance of recognising multiple identities, especially in the face of the government's decision to withdraw the 'dual discrimination' provision in the Equality Act 2010. The third is that no matter how open an organisation's culture becomes, nothing should supercede a person's right to privacy, subject to the law, especially around issues concerning his or her life outside the workplace. 0 Reply as...
