Do Not Circulate

The over eager  admin support. Recalling the uncorrected draft. Why people read all 60 pages, not just 2 page executive summary-wanted to know what author/senior managers didn’t want us to know. Asked those who read recalled copy, “ what did it say? Surprisingly they remembered and highlighted different things - they were a cross section of office employees.Re named them the review group and attached their comments to the full report. Executive summary and review comments made widely available- full report now reduced /edited to 20 pages available only on request and note kept of who had received. Word of mouth  spread news of the report “ management sent out by mistake”. Most widely read and discussed report ever.

Short article written about whole incident published in professional press picked up by specialist communication publication, interview with author ran in one of quality Sundays. Quote from author ,” We provided a short description of what happened but deliberately did not attempt to identify lessons learnt we have left that to the reader because different people will get different things from this experience depending on their circumstances, role, status and audience”. A number of university research projects are now planned around improving communication using this experience as a starting point.
