Actions that get results!

Events - Public

Starting 27 Jun 2024 - 18:00 through to 27 Jun 2024 - 20:30

Project professionals work with a range of people to deliver their objectives.  So what happens if there is a perception of unequal access to resources, opportunities or recognition? This has been the experience of Dr Marcia Philbin and she will share insights from her successful career on how she turned negative experiences into intentional action to achieve success in her career as a scientist, a project manager, a programme manager, a director and now as a Chief Executive.

She will share the importance of taking personal action to learn your craft by investing in ongoing education and training, networking and pushing yourself outside your comfort zone.  It is not what you do but the way that you do it and that’s what gets results!

In many projects, the outputs are designed to benefit target audiences but sometimes those involved in delivering the projects do not always feel they are part of the project team because opportunities are not opened to them, they are not recognised for their contribution or they are treated differently because of some characteristic.

In this presentation, Dr Marcia Philbin will share her reflections on the strategies she has used to overcome and circumvent the biases and barriers that have for too long intentionally or unintentionally kept people like her on the outside.

Dr Philbin will evidence why EDI should not be a bolt on for projects but be embedded from the outset because opportunities should be accessible to everyone. Decisions on capability should not be based on accents, postcode, skin colour, gender, hair colour or even age.

Dr Philbin will share how she used her experience, knowledge and skills to transform the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Medicine so that it is representative of its membership and gives voice to pressing issues affecting medicines such as the need for more diversity of participants in clinical trials.  In addition, she will show the importance of investing in your own professional development and supporting others to do the same.

By the end of the talk, you will gain tips on actions to take to achieve life-enhancing change in self, others and projects.
