Tax can feel like a difficult subject for money guiders and for people seeking help, alike. And for anyone on a low income who is facing an unexpected tax bill or debt, it can be a traumatic time. So a basic understanding of income tax issues, communications with HMRC (HM Revenue & Customs) and understanding how organisations can help people on low incomes is useful.

What you’ll learn

This session will cover a range of topics related to tax such as

· Awareness of tax-related issues and communications from HMRC

· Specific tax issues that your clients may face, such as tax debts, penalties, PAYE and self-employment, marriage allowance and bereavement

· Discussion of case studies of people with real tax problems

· How and when to signpost and refer people to TaxAid and Tax Help for Older People

· Scams awareness

· Other resources for tax-related information and support.

Who should attend

Anyone giving money guidance in England and Wales who wants to be in a better position to understand some of the tax issues that might arise, where they could signpost for complex support and what that support might look like.
