Community Day of Practice: Musculoskeletal Health & BAME Inequalities

Events - Public

Starting 24 Mar 2020 - 12:00 through to 24 Mar 2020 - 16:00

Musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions account for 30% of GP consultations in England ( NHS Long Term Plan), with low back pain and neck pain resulting in the greatest amount of years lost to disability.

Some evidence suggests Black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) groups report higher rates of MSK conditions and are more likely to experience risk factors such as deprivation, obesity, stress, depression and physical inactivity.

As part of the VCSE Health and Wellbeing Alliance (HWA) the Race Equality Foundation has been working in partnership with FaithAction and LGB&T Partnership to explore the current evidence base of musculoskeletal conditions, inequality and improving the experience of healthy ageing for BAME communities.

The outcomes of this work include a literature review on the prevalence rates of MSK conditions in adult BAME groups, qualitative informed conversations with BAME people with MSK conditions and infographics of the key findings.

As part of this work we are bringing together a diversity of professionals in a Community Day of Practice to explore the findings of the project and foster cross sector learning and solutions to improve the outcomes of BAME people with MSK.

  1. We will explore the findings of the recent project and

  2. Explore how we can collectively make change through participants sharing their challenges, solutions, interventions and best practice

  3. Collectively establish a learning network to continue sharing best practice

The day will run from 12noon to 4pm at the Race Equality Foundation Training Rooms. Lunch will be provided.

This event is open to any professional who support and work with BAME people with MSK conditions. This includes clinicians, researchers, voluntary and community sector groups and healthcare professionals.
