Two extremes exist when managing difficult or underperforming staff: the first is the business owner who sacks his/her staff in a fit of temper; the second is a manager, usually in a much larger organisation, that “deals” with disruptive or underperforming staff by transferring them to another team in the same organisation. Both of these extremes are detrimental to the business, the staff member, and of course any colleagues.

This workshop aims to provide clarity around the obligations that all employers have. We will explain the different categories of workers that exist when people are engaged. We will also take participants through a fair dismissal procedure, explaining at each stage what is necessary to provide clarity for both sides of any dispute.

The different categories of workers: including part-timers, agency workers, those on fixed term contracts, contractors and freelancers, volunteers and employees.

Employment law - why and how it changes. 

“Unfair dismissal” - what does it mean?

The five potentially fair reasons for dismissal.

Gross misconduct.

Automatically “unfair” dismissal.
