The Learning from Winterbourne View: Hotseat discussion with Margaret Flynn

On Thursday 6^th December between 12.30 and 2.30 the Safeguarding Community of Practice will be hosting a hotseat on The Learning from Winterbourne View. Topics could include: -

• Issues arising from the Review
• Issues for Commissioners of Learning Disability Services
• Issues for Mental Health and Learning Disability Services

The hotseat host will be Margaret Flynn. Margaret conducted the Serious Case Review into Winterbourne View on behalf of South Gloucestershire Safeguarding Vulnerable Adults Board. Margaret is an experienced Reviewer who was commissioned to undertake this review following the reporting of the incidents in the Panorama programme Undercover Care: the Abuse Exposed in May 2011.

Given the current high level of interest in the issues arising from Winterbourne following the criminal prosecutions of the staff and the second Panorama programme on 29^th October shown on BBC 1, this is a valuable and timely opportunity for colleagues to join the discussion. This affords staff the unique opportunity to discuss the issues directly with the author of the SCR to get a first hand understanding of the issues and context. This is an excellent way to contribute to the ongoing discussion with the shared aim of developing safer services in the future.
