This event is free to people from local authorities who subscribe to esd-toolkit, otherwise there is a £75 charge per person. If you would  like to check if your local authority is a subscriber to esd-toolkit please e-mail Alexandra.marshall@local.gov.uk

In the event of significant excess demand, we may have to limit the numbers of places available to each attending organisation. What is it?

This online resource helps produce a concise case within a professional report which it generates to inform whether a new programme is worth doing, along with the business justification for doing it.  The tool is designed to make it easier to produce a business case for projects with social outcomes and longer-term external benefits. It can be used for any type of project, but it is specifically designed to deal with projects relating to helping disadvantaged people and communities.  It reduces the need for expensive consultants and aids project staff through the processes to follow and the questions to consider.

Who should attend?

Any local government officer or member involved in the set-up or delivery of business improvement programmes.  Particular benefits to practitioners who need to develop convincing arguments to introduce change to meet particular objectives.

  • To understand and demonstrate the key principles of the HM Treasury “Green Book” business case approach
  • To have a clear grasp of the benefits of the esd toolkit business case tool
  • To distinguish between the three phases of the business case tool and their roles

  • Know how to use the tool to facilitate structured debate on the business case for a project
  • Be able to use the tool to capture data about your projects – and identify where you need/have gaps in data that would help the business case
  • Understand how to use the tool for stakeholder engagement/buy-in

  • Be able to develop rigorous business cases for projects at their own organisation
