Find out how Shropshire Council and partners used customer insight to understand the barriers to physical activity in residents. The project used a range of tools & techniques to find out why people in the market town of Oswestry did not take enough physical exercise. Walking, swimming, cricket and rugby were chosen as key activities to focus on to engage partners and to understand current provision.

Local partnership working has improved as a result of this project and the “Active Oswestry” brand has been taken on by other market towns in the county. During the project the council were keen to be exposed to new ways of engaging with local people & as a result of this project customer insight is now embedded & has helped to put service users at the heart of service design.

Some key points from the project:

Research

  • Focus on 3 types of customers, using Sport England market segments
  • Extensive work with residents (including ethnographic filming)
  • Engagement with local sports clubs, volunteers and national governing bodies.

 Outputs

  • Establishment of the Active Oswestry partnership
  • Detailed 'insights and opportunities' report which provided creative ideas for innovating in physical activity
  • Engagement with partners & creating new partnerships
  • Putting customer insight & co-design at the heart of transformation
