Why you should attend

Tackling drug and alcohol misuse in children, young people and adults will become the responsibility of local authorities in April 2013 when they take on their full set of public health responsibilities.

Not only is drug and alcohol misuse a huge public health issue, it is also a huge drain on public resources. The estimated cost of alcohol harm to the NHS in England is £2.7 billion and drug misuse costs society an estimated £15.3 billion a year.

Drug and alcohol misuse is a complex issue which has a negative impact on individuals - affecting children, young people, adults, families and communities. It will be one of the most challenging tasks that local authorities will face and will require strong partnership working.

Local government has a clear and important role to play in reducing alcohol and drug use; working with its partners it has the opportunity to take a whole population approach to promoting and implementing effective drug, alcohol and health and wellbeing strategies to address the key issues and reduce health inequalities in communities.

This powerful one day event will provide delegates with an in-depth understanding of the latest policy and government initiatives. It will explore the strategic role of Health and Wellbeing Boards, the issues affecting children, young people and adults and will share learning. The conference will be delivered through a series of interactive speaker sessions and workshops.
