Migration statistics: do the official figures meet the needs?

Events - Public

Starting 06 Dec 2012 - 17:00 through to 07 Dec 2012 - 00:00

A joint meeting of the Official Statistics and Social Statistics Sections will take place on 6th December 2012 at 5pm with tea/coffee from 4.30pm.

Both the Home Office and ONS have been undertaking extensive work to improve the quality, range and presentation of international migration statistics for the UK.  This is an area of great political sensitivity and it is vital that the policy debate is informed by robust and trusted evidence.

  • 'Developments in the measuring and reporting of international migration statistics'- Sarah Crofts and Paul Vickers (ONS)
  •  ‘Enhancing Home Office Statistics on UK Migration Control’ - Chris Kershaw and David Matz (HO)
  • John Salt – Migration Research Unit, UCL
  • Open forum – the speakers will respond to questions from the floor.

Attendance is free and open to all, whether fellows of the RSS or not. Pre-registration is however required. You can register by email

events@rss.org.uk or by phone (020) 7638 8998.  For directions see www.rss.org.uk/findus.
