A better understanding and management of social dynamics (why people behave as they do) provides the greatest opportunity for improving project delivery. We are systematically failing to pay due care and attention to the ‘soft’ issues during times of major change.

Volunteer research team comprising Parag Gogate, Rod Willis and Carole Osterweil submitted a proposal to APM in March 2015 with a view to carrying out research and explore the above issues in more detail. The primary objective of this research project is to provide a means of measurement and diagnosis that will enable Change, Programme and Project Managers to quickly explore and identify potential behavioural obstacles at the Team/Organisational level and then take the necessary action to minimise impact and maximise productivity.

At this session we will be providing some background information on group dynamics during periods of change and will be presenting the key findings from the research project.

Each delegate will have the opportunity to interact and reflect in a facilitated manner with their unique scorecard (based on the Diagnostic Tool as an output from the research) having bought to mind an active or recent change initiative. This will be followed by a question and answer session.
By taking this diagnostic, practitioners will understand if they are doing better or worse than the ‘norm’ group across multiple behavioural measurement points as identified in the research.  This is valuable as it will aid in forecasting/prediction and can build to become an effective Behavioural Risk Assessment extending current good practice.

The Enabling Change SIG Committee will then review their activities in the year just past and their plans for the following year. This will be followed by a brief AGM where the Committee will be elected to take the SIG forward.
