Project management needs to reverse the trend of relying on mechanical processes and acknowledge the significance of people and the systems they represent.

Stakeholder theory is important to project management (PM). The days when all project managers had to think about was the iron triangle of time, cost and quality are long gone, and complexity within PM has grown year on year because of a number of factors. Massive technological advances in mobile devices, data storage and real time communication means that more project decisions have to be made faster. Unknown future events and innovative ideas will impact projects but are very hard to predict. As projects get bigger and more expensive the number of stakeholders the project manager needs to interact with increases.
In acknowledgement of some of these truths, the experienced speakers at this unique event will be sharing their knowledge and drawing on the:

  • London School of Economics research into stakeholders
  • soft side of the project management process
  • human aspects of strategic planning
  • people factors within contract procurement
  • future for stakeholder engagement

There is a clear appetite across a number of organisations to refocus the project management community on the power of people, and this event aims to provide a catalyst to a number of different voices sharing a common view.

Audience involvement will be welcomed, and the objective will be for those present to arrive at a plan for action which will push the project management profession out of the current positivist paradigm and into a new era that acknowledges human uncertainties while coming up with practical models to mitigate them.

This is an APM People SIG event embracing the Stakeholder Engagement Focus Group and the Strategic Planning Society.
