The best way to avoid the truth is to avoid project reviews – it also helps to avoid delivery!

These reviews are, or at least should be, exercises in identifying those things which may hinder the successful delivery of a project or programme and then making recommendations to address them. As such, they can be of the greatest assistance to the programme/project manager who 'carries the can' for non-delivery.

The 'should be' is because reviews are sometimes a last resort and take place when problems may be irreparable. That 'should be' also reflects nominalism where reviews are not truly independent but are carried out to tick a box. We can avoid these failures, easily, by reviewing our projects at its key stages.

Based on numerous (anonymised!) reviews of public and private sector projects, the most common project killer problems will be identified and discussed. The most frequently given recommendations will also be shared. The excuses project managers give for avoiding reviews will be explored and countered.

We are getting quite good in some areas of programme/project management whilst others still receive scant attention. Some areas are also more significant in determining successful delivery, whilst problems in other areas have limited impact.

As in reviews themselves, this presentation will concentrate on those things which impact delivery to the greatest extent. Whilst accepting that 'greatest extent' is not an objective measure, this presentation should encourage attendees to build regular independent reviews into their plans and increase their chances of successful delivery.
