Professor Niven Rennie

Director Scottish Violence Reduction Unit

In 2004 the World Health Organisation declared violence to be a public health issue.  At that time Glasgow was known as the ‘murder capital of Europe’ and Scotland ‘the most violent country in the developed world’.

In 2005, Strathclyde Police founded the Scottish Violence Reduction Unit (SVRU) and adopted a public health approach to the Scottish Violence problem.  That year there were 137 murders in Scotland.  Last year there were 55.

Clearly somethings have changed positively over this period.  That said, Scotland now has record levels of drug deaths, its problems with alcohol remain and 55 murders indicates that much work remains to be undertaken.

In this free seminar Professor Niven Rennie, Director of the SVRU will discuss Scotland’s violence journey, summarise 18 years of work and outline the challenges that remain to be tackled.
