Money Guiders Northern Ireland Event (In-Person Event: Belfast)

Join the Northern Ireland network for their first face to face event with GamCare to learn about the impact of gambling – how and where to get support.

About this event

GamCare helpline advisers are hearing that the cost of living is impacting more people’s gambling behaviours- particularly those gamblers who have recovered. Many people are turning to gambling hoping for a quick win or experience negative impacts such as chasing their losses, feeling overwhelmed and not being able to pay their bills.

Who is leading this session?

GamCare is the leading provider of information, advice and support for anyone affected by gambling harms. We operate the National Gambling Helpline, provide support for young people affected by their own or someone else’s gambling as part of the Young People’s Support Service, create awareness about safer gambling and treatment, and encourage an effective approach to safer gambling within the gambling industry.

Who should attend?

All money guidance practitioners who are supporting service users with diffcult conversations and anyone offering guidance to improve the financial wellbeing. It is for practitioners who are dealing with, or might come into contact with, members of the public who may be vulnerable, susceptible or impacted by gambling addictions.

Agenda

Come along to Gamcare’s CPD accredited training and:

- See how gambling can move from being a social activity to causing significant harm

- Find out how to spot the signs of gambling related harm and find guidance around offering support

- Understand better the blurred lines between gambling and online gaming

- Find out about persuasive gambling advertising and helping your clients to make informed and safer decisions

- Find out more about the support and treatment services that are available

There will be an opportunity for some Q&A after the presentation.

The Money Guiders Programme

Money Guiders is a programme run by MaPS, which seeks to help money guidance practitioners improve their knowledge, skills and confidence. Everything that the Money Guiders programme offers centres around the Money Guidance Competency Framework - it's there to help you better understand the full breadth and depth of money related issues that fall outside of the regulated financial advice service sector - the things you talk to your customers about.

Before attending the session, you could spend some time considering the challenges you face in your work, specifically when you provide help and guidance to your clients or service users around money issues.

  • How do you spot potential problems?

  • How can you start conversations about money in a sensitive way and at the appropriate time?

  • How do you maintain good boundaries in your role as a money guidance practitioner within your main area of work?
