The Money Guiders Wales Network and the Money Guiders England Network are offering this session on Understanding Tax for Money Guidance Practitioners, delivered by TaxAid and Tax Help for Older People.

About this event:

This session is all about helping you feel more confident talking to your customers and clients about tax issues that they may raise with you. We acknowledge that tax issues can cause unnecessary anxiety and stress and contribute to poor well being – by providing an independent and free service and by improving the knowledge and awareness of the tax system, TaxAid and Tax Help for Older People aim to provide better outcomes for their beneficiaries.

What you'll learn:

The session will cover a range of topics, including:

    • Awareness of tax-related issues and communications from HMRC
    • Specific tax issues that your clients may face, such as tax debts, penalties, PAYE and self-employment, marriage allowance, bereavement, and more
    • Discussion of case studies of people with real tax problems
    • How and when to signpost and refer people to TaxAid and Tax Help for Older People
    • Other resources for tax-related information and support

Who should attend?

Money Guidance Practitioners in England and Wales who are in a position to help members of the public with their tax. Attendees of this session could potentially be in roles such as Housing Support Worker, Family Support Worker, Food Bank Volunteer, Advice Worker, Mental Health Support etcetera.

Who is leading this session?

TaxAid and Tax Help for Older People are two charities providing free, confidential, independent, and expert help and advice for people experiencing difficulties and/or on lower incomes who cannot afford to access professional tax advice. We are a safety net for those who cannot be assisted by HMRC because they need independent advice, or calculations, or they are in dispute with HMRC.

Via our telephone helpline, email, or face-to-face meetings, our 30 staff and around 500 volunteers support UK taxpayers as they face tax issues such as self-employment, pensions, PAYE and National Insurance, COVID grants, bereavement, retirement, and much more.

The Money Guiders Programme

Money Guiders is a programme run by MaPS, which seeks to help money guidance practitioners improve their knowledge, skills and confidence. Everything that the Money Guiders programme offers centres around the Money Guidance Competency Framework - it's there to help you better understand the full breadth and depth of money related issues that fall outside of the regulated financial advice service sector - the things you talk to your customers about.

Before attending the session, you could spend some time considering the challenges you face in your work, specifically when you provide help and guidance to your clients or service users around money issues.

  • How do you spot potential problems?

  • How can you start conversations about money in a sensitive way and at the appropriate time?

  • How do you maintain good boundaries in your role as a money guidance practitioner within your main area of work?
