Discuss findings from this new final Improvement Service overview report into allocating levy funding devolved to the Scottish Government.

About this event

The IS have published their final overview report on ‘Potential Funding Models and Delivery Approaches’ which could be used to allocate the levy funding devolved to the Scottish Government for debt advice. The report, which is based on desktop research and extensive stakeholder engagement, identified, and assessed eight potential funding models. There was only one funding model that had almost unanimous support and that was a ‘Grants Programme managed by an independent organisation’. As well as having cross sector support, it is a proven and effective model. It is suggested that to support continual improvement a grant programme funded in this way continues and includes a small amount that supports activities related to ‘change and innovation’.

Throughout Scotland, organisations across all sectors provide access to debt and money advice services. Funding for services is often short term, insecure and geographically inconsistent. This contributes to some of the tensions that were identified in the course of the engagement process and have made identifying an acceptable funding model to distribute the debt levy funding challenging. To try to get more consistent access to debt and money advice services and to have a more settled and stable approach to funding, the report suggests that work continue on developing an ‘Advice Services Partnership Framework’ between the Scottish and Local Government which may offer a longer- term funding model.

The Money Guiders Programme

Money Guiders is a programme run by MaPS, which seeks to help money guidance practitioners improve their knowledge, skills and confidence. Everything that the Money Guiders programme offers centres around the Money Guidance Competency Framework - it's there to help you better understand the full breadth and depth of money related issues that fall outside of the regulated financial advice service sector - the things you talk to your customers about.

Before attending the session, you could spend some time considering the challenges you face in your work, specifically when you provide help and guidance to your clients or service users around money issues.

  • How do you spot potential problems?

  • How can you start conversations about money in a sensitive way and at the appropriate time?

  • How do you maintain good boundaries in your role as a money guidance practitioner within your main area of work?
