Peer to Peer Learning Event - maintaining impartiality, diplomacy and flexibility 

Hosted by the Money Guiders England Network

The Money Guider's England network is run by Quaker Social Action (QSA), an anti poverty charity based in London.

QSA helps people on low incomes in east London and across the UK to seek solutions to the issues affecting their lives.

Founded 150 years ago by the religious group Quakers, today QSA is an independent charity inspired by Quaker values like equality in our work against poverty and injustice.

The session will focus on the importance of diplomacy, flexibility and self awareness as money guidance practitioners.

Attendees will discuss

• Impartiality- providers of money guidance must do so impartially; both in terms of the information they provide and in terms of any organisations the customer is signposted to. Practitioners must be objective, not allowing themselves to be influenced by personal feelings or opinions. They must also be empathetic and sensitive to the wishes of the customer but not allow those feelings of empathy to influence the provision of best advice and guidance. We will discuss what this means sharing examples of best practice and challenges being faced in relation to this issue
• Diplomacy - practitioners must possess the quality of diplomacy and be sensitive and skillful in managing relations with others. We will discuss what this means in practice and share examples of best practice or any challenges faced in this regard.
• Flexibility -Practitioners must be flexible in their approach, showing awareness and understanding of the needs and preferences of others le reluctant to access services and support. We will explore different learning styles, any challenges faced and share examples of best practice.

Money Guidance Competency Framework

Money Guidance Foundations: Personal Qualities and Attributes. A3 Impartiality. Providers of money guidance must do so impartially; both in terms of the information they provide and in terms of any organisations the customer is signposted to. Practitioners will therefore be objective, not allowing themselves to be influenced by personal feelings or opinions. They must also be empathetic and sensitive to the wishes of the customer but not allow those feelings of empathy to influence the provision of best advice and guidance. Awareness of actual and potential conflicts of interest and what actions to be taken in those circumstances is important.

A4 Diplomacy- Practitioners must possess the quality of diplomacy and be sensitive and skillful in managing relations with others. The ability to maintain a positive attitude is an attribute which they should possess alongside reliability.

A5 Flexibility-Practitioners must be flexible in their approach, showing awareness and understanding of the needs and preferences of others.Know your customer. “This domain is about understanding who the customer is and their needs – which they may or may not be aware of – and draws on many of the cross-cutting behaviours and skills that underpin practice. It requires the practitioner to develop an understanding of their customers, including background, circumstances, expectations and goals.”
