Moving out of the family home, a blossoming independence and social life, further education, or starting out a career: these are all the traditional markings of the freedoms we begin to embark upon in our transition to adulthood. For young adult carers – who face a host of disadvantages and injustices – few, if any of these freedoms will feel tangible. Given the challenges they face, there is potential for homelessness and other social injustices among these young people – and considering that young adult carers (aged 18-25) make up several percent of the population of their age group.

Move on Up – a pilot project between Quaker Social Action and Commonweal Housing that housed and supported young adult carers – serves as proof of the benefits that respite from care, the value of a home away from caring duties, and tailored support can bestow upon them.

Local authorities, housing providers and the third sector can take learnings from this project on the value of embedding housing into support for young adult carers; but even more the crucial importance of asking about and understanding the housing needs of these young people.

At this event we will hear from the staff on the Move on Up project, outlining its goals and achievements, lessons and successes and recommendations.

Who is this session for?

This session could be for any money guiders, policy, partnership and practice managers who ever support young adult carers.

People who work generally in housing or in career and life support guidance might be interested. They could be a general money guider, a housing officer, a career coach or anyone who finds themselves giving guidance with young adult carers or similar categories of client

Money Guidance Competency Framework | Technical Domain 1: Knowing your customer

This domain is about understanding who the customer is and their needs – which they may or may not be aware of – and draws on many of the cross-cutting behaviours and skills that underpin practice. It requires the practitioner to develop an understanding of their customers, including background, circumstances, expectations and goals.

Young adult carers aged 18-25 are a specific kind of client with particular background and circumstances often with specific needs that might need addressing.
