This free seminar provides an opportunity to hear about research undertaken at the University of West England around trauma informed care for individuals with sexual convictions and a history of trauma.

The primary research, with professionals across academia and front-line criminal justice practice, spawned the creation of ‘ten critical questions’ for trauma informed practice. This was recently published in HMIP academic insights in November 2023.

In this seminar, Kieran and Sarah will be discussing each of the ten questions which look at trauma informed care through the lens of risk management, organisational readiness and wider community and integration barriers. Questions include ‘what is trauma and whose is it to define?’, ‘Can the priorities of managing risk, protecting the public and being trauma responsive reside together?’, ‘Is the physical, organisational and psychological environment of criminal justice settings conducive to a trauma informed approach?’ and ‘Is the wider community supportive of trauma informed approaches?’

The seminar aims to encourage critical thinking about the use of the term ‘trauma informed care’, its implementation and application and how to overcome potential challenges to ensure good practice.
