“Child First” is the evidence-informed framework for decision-making in youth justice in England and Wales. This free online seminar provides an opportunity to hear about the development of Child First, its key research messages, and how it is being put into policy and practice.

Child First is a four-tenet framework that summarises contemporary understandings of what works with children in trouble. It has been adopted as the guiding principle for youth justice in England and Wales, underpinning (for example) the national standards and case management guidance for youth justice, custody policy, and informing CPS guidelines for children as suspects and defendants.

In this seminar, we will hear from Professor Neal Hazel who led the development of the Child First framework at the Youth Justice Board.  In addition to discussing the key messages in each tenet, we will explore the successes and challenges for its formation and implementation, and the lessons these hold for developing evidence-based policy and practice in social justice.
