From Twitter gritter to tweets about streets...

The recent inclement weather has again given councils the opportunity to test how effective Twitter hashtags can be in communicating with residents; providing timely, easy-to-keep-track-of updates on gritted roads and also responding to geo-specific queries from Twitter followers.

However, is Twittergritter the only practical example of when this type of use of hashtags by councils works? Are there any other services of instances when it is truly effective? Are we missing a trick by not considering a standardised approach to hashtags across local government?

If you've got something to share on this, join us in the #localgov gets social group on Thursday 28 February between 11am-1pm for a focussed discussion on this and related issues. Feel free to add comments before then too.

We look forward to hearing from you. Join the discussion here.
