Mandela Day

As the world says goodbye to a great campaigner for social justice, it makes us all reflect on the small things we do, and could do, to improve the lives of others in our communities.

“What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead.” — Nelson Mandela

There is already a 'Nelson Mandela International Day' which isn't a public holiday but a chance to uphold the values of equality, democracy, justice and social equity. The campaign, celebrated each year on Nelson Mandela’s Birthday (18 July), honours the 67 years Mandela spent fighting for these causes by asking people to spend 67 minutes on volunteering and community service.

What we thought was, let’s expand on this and turn 67 minutes of our time into a day devoted to making small changes. Let’s create a national movement for good with a focus on community cohesion so we too can continue to uphold the values Nelson Mandela fought strongly within our own diverse communities.

So, over to you...
