ONS Consultation on Small Area Population Estimates

ONS are consulting on the future publication of population estimates for health areas and a request for information on the uses made of small area population estimates in general, including your views on the quality of the products. The consultation runs from 16th June 2014 through to 25th July 2014.

ONS is proposing that future releases of mid-year population estimates for health areas will only be made available for current health geographies. Therefore the health geographies available for mid-2013 estimates onwards would be:

  • Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs)
  • NHS Area Teams
  • NHS Commissioning Regions

Estimates for Primary Care Organisations (PCOs) and Strategic Health Authorities (SHAs) will no longer be published.

ONS produces official population estimates for the UK and its constituent countries, the regions of England and Wales, local authorities and other geographic areas within England and Wales. They provide details of the number of people usually resident within each area on 30 June of the reference year. Small area population estimates include figures for both statistical geographies (eg Super Output Areas) and sub-regional administrative geographic areas (eg wards, parliamentary constituencies and health areas).
