Sustainable Development Unit (SDU) consultation on integrated metrics module

The Sustainable Development Strategy for the Health, Public Health and Social Care System 2014-2020 describes the vision for a sustainable health and care system by reducing carbon emissions, protecting natural resources, preparing communities for extreme weather events and promoting healthy lifestyles and environments.

The strategy is supported by eight modules, each with its own section on the Sustainable Development Unit website providing further detail including implementation guidance. Five modules were published in January 2014:

  • ? Leadership, engagement and development
  • ? Sustainable clinical and care models
  • ? Healthy, sustainable and resilient communities
  • ? Carbon hotspots
  • ? Commissioning and procurement

A further three are currently out to consultation from 2nd June to 31st August 2014 and will be published in January 2015:

  • ? An integrated metrics approach
  • ? Innovation, technology and R&D
  • ? Creating social value

The ‘Integrated metrics approach’ module consultation proposes voluntary indicators of progress on sustainable development across the health and care system. Its aim is to provide an easy to use resource to develop tailored scorecards appropriate for the local context. The module has three key objectives:

  • Highlight the existing data that can be used to inform progress on sustainable development
  • Highlight measures that can be used across different settings
  • Provide recommendations including how to use existing indicators well and future development opportunities e.g. indicator definitions and data collection if appropriate.

The consultation runs from 2nd June to 31st August 2014 and seeks views from across the NHS, public health and social care system on the integrated metrics approach outlined in this document.

Your feedback will help shape the metrics available to the health and care system and help each setting in the system to understand how they can measure their progress on sustainable development through to 2020. Please respond to the consultation questions using the online survey that can be accessed by clicking on this link - www.sduhealth.org.uk/consultation

The SDU is funded by, and accountable to, NHS England and Public Health England to work across the NHS, public health and social care system.
